Description
From the critically acclaimed author of Tallgrass comes a powerful novel about an unlikely friendship between two women and the secrets they’ve kept in order to survive life in a rugged Colorado mining town.
It’s 1936 and the Great Depression has taken its toll. Up in the high country of the snow-covered Rocky Mountains, eighty-six-year-old Hennie Comfort has lived in Middle Swan, Colorado, since before it was Colorado. When she first meets seventeen-year-old Nit Spindle, Hennie is drawn to the grieving young girl. Nit and her husband have come to this small mining town in search of work, but the loneliness and loss Nit feels are almost too much to bear. One day she notices an old sign that reads prayers for sale in front of Hennie’s house. Hennie doesn’t actually take money for her prayers, never has, but she invites the skinny girl in anyway. The harsh conditions of life that each has endured create an instant bond, and a friendship is born, one in which the deepest of hardships are shared and the darkest of secrets are confessed.
Sandra Dallas has created an unforgettable tale of a friendship between two women, one with surprising twists and turns, and one that is ultimately a revelation of the finest parts of the human spirit.

Summary: ""Prayers for Sale" opinion"
This book is well written with believable characters. If you've traveled in Colorado at all, the book will hold your attention even more because you'll be familiar with some of the locations and understand the climate the characters are living in. Hennie is a remarkable character, one you'll want to bring home to share a cup of coffee. And if you're a quilter - this is a must read book!

Summary: "Amazing women !"
I really loved this book, myself. A lot of history, a bit of mystery, and the characters seemed very familiar to me. Gave a great deal of insight into what my grandmother and other women endured, leaving homes and families behind to move west accompanied by total uncertainty and a great deal of loneliness, as well as the physical hardships and dangers they faced. I am not sure I could have done what they did, frankly. They were a brave lot, and I feel that without them, the American West could never have become what it is today. I was tremendously moved by it, felt I was walking with the characters in the book. They were amazing and very real to me.
This copy was purchased as a gift for a friend, and the book was shipped out quickly, arrived in great shape.

Summary: "stories within a story"
i really enjoyed this story of friendship between two women of very different ages.
set in a colorado mining town in the 1930's, 86-year old, henie, takes a young newlywed & area newcomer, nit, under her wing. henie shares her life with nit thru a series of stories, many times as she is quilting a block. her stories run the gamut of funny to heartwarming to heart-crushing.
like the blocks of her quilting finally assembled, henie's stories come together as a rich quilt of life and friendship.

Summary: "Prayers for Sale"
Everything by Sandra Dallas is a good, satisfying read. My 84 year old Mother has just finished Prayers for Sale and I will read it next. We now have all of Ms. Dallas' books. Who knew that my mom would become a "reader" in her 80's!
There is a balance of suspense or tension mixed with human relationships in various forms while presenting the story with intelligence and grace. There is a moral center in all of her stories without being "religious" or didactic.
It is a plus also that her women are strong without being super-human and find themselves in everyday life situations. The history that Ms. Dallas shares also keeps me reading.
